At The Library ~ Part 2 of 5

Ok, Mark. You asked for it, you've got it. Here it is - the second installment of your favourite library series: Continuation from Part 1. The remaining 3 parts have been completed and will be posted on regular intervals. Stay tuned ;-)

It was not mighty fine with her mom nor Clara, her best friend though.

"Dean's not your type, Jayne. You need someone deep and serious. He seems to take life as one huge joke," said Clara.

"You are still studying. Shouldn't be spending all your time mooning about boys!" That was of course, from her mom.

Jayne can only sigh. She wasn't Dean's steady date or anything, nor would anything ever happen at the rate things were going with him. So her mom need not worry about anything remotely related to romance transpiring between them.

And as for Clara's theory as to who would suit her to a T, well, that's a subjective matter at best. Who's to say who would be good for her at the end of it all? The heart wants what it wants. You can choose logically the paths you want to follow, but who can dictate the heart to fully embrace that path?

At the moment, her heart was untouched and uncommitted to any man. But still, it was nice to have someone to think about when all her friends were talking about the boys they were going out with. At least she wouldn't feel so left out or unable to relate to what her close pals were going through.

Clara, ever the strong one, of course pooh-poohed the whole thing. "Stuff and nonsense! You shouldn't need a man to blend in with the crowd. If you don't have a man, you don't have a man. You are not strange. You don't have a disease. You just don't have a man."

Easier said than done. The annual college ball was looming ahead and she was still dateless. She needed a man. If at least for just a night. And she had an idea of who she wanted to be her Prince for the night. Dishy Dean. But the dates were drawing near and it looked like he'd rather choke on a frog than gather enough guts to ask her on time.

Maybe she should ask him instead. It was after all the 21st century. And it was just for the annual ball. It wasn't as if she was asking him to marry her. It'll be cool.

Just then her phone rang. It was Matt, her childhood friend turned Mr. Popularity in college. "Hey, babe. Wanna go to the prom with me?" he drawled in his sexiest voice.

She burst out laughing. She couldn't help it. He always had this effect on her. She could never take him seriously - they knew each other too well.

"You must be reaching a new kinda low to be asking me to the ball. What happened to your Eileen or was it Daisy?"

"Eileen and I decided to call it quits. No, don't ask why," he said breezily. Jayne bit her tongue at that. She felt another lecture coming up at his devil-may-care attitude towards relationships. Eileen was like his 3-or-so months girlfriend.

"So now I am in need of a date. And since you are dateless, I thought we could accompany each other for the night," he continued smoothly.

"What makes you think I'm dateless? I'll have you know, I've got hoardes of guys waiting to ask for my veritable consent to be their date for the night," Jayne retorted indignantly. It may be a lie for all she knew. But a little imagination and vanity wouldn't hurt. Matt really needed to be brought down a peg or two. "Hoardes!"

"I know the general view of your state of desirability, my dear," he chuckled. "Which is precisely why most guys are hesitant to ask you out. They think they have too much competition, they don't even bother to try. And this is where I come in to rescue you from your state of datelessness."

"Why, I never!" she gasped in horror. "You are either a horrible liar or trying to make a very bad joke."

She could almost visualise Matt shrugging his muscular shoulders. "Think whatever you want, babe. But you are my date. Ciao. Look nice for me, ya?"

And with that, the impossible man hung up on her.
