Isaura

image

I loved this song while I was growing up. It was the theme song of a Brazillian telenovella about a slave girl called Isaura. Francesca Peters sang it with her sweet strong voice.

Am going through some blahs and this song really spoke to my heart. It really has a beautiful tune, too. Too bad I don't have the mp3 to it.

There's also a funny history to this song. A few years ago, when I met my friend Jenn, we couldn't find anything in common. She likes Volvo, I like Toyota. She likes fair-skinned dudes while I drool over tanned ones. In short, we are just too different to form any superficial bonds lar, so to speak.

But one day, when we were travelling in a car together, the quiet of the night inspired me to sing this song. Jenn grabbed my arm and asked, "Oh my gosh, are you singing Isaura? That's like my ultimate favourite childhood song!" We sang the song together like larks after that. It was amazing how we can still remember it by heart.

And that was pretty much the only thing we have in common till today. Heh.

Here's the song and brief translation below:

Terkulai dalam jambangan
Harapan menjadi debu
Begitu hancurnya hati
Akibat cinta buta
Terlupa diri

Betapa lemahnya aku
Melawan mimpi duniawi
Sungguh aku tiada berdaya
Bagai bahtera dihempas
Gelora pedoman tiada

Setelah ku menyedari
Bahawa tak
Semua jalan berliku
Tiada langit kan mendung selalu
Terlambat bukan
Erti tamat

This song basically talks about how the protagonist's heart and dreams got broken and crushed beyond her understanding. How stupid she felt for giving her heart blindly away. How weak she feels sometimes. How she feels lost in the storms of life like a boat being tossed helplessly in the rough seas.

But then, she realises that not all roads are winding nor lead to dead ends. The sky isn't always gloomy. And even though you feel that life has passed you by, it's never too late. It's not the end yet. There is still hope.

And before anyone asks, nope. I'm not having a boy-related problem :-P :P
