"Hi Lenglui"

Dan wanted a favour from my girl assistant - to help him scan some documents. He's a salesman at heart, and we all know how flatteringly smooth some salespeople can be. And so one day, he came over our cubicle and put on his grooviest voice to an old tired line:
Hey there, Lenglui*....

Carol, a prettily adorned colleague who was sitting nearby turned her head at that greeting and said,
Yes... Dan? You called me ar?

After a moment of stunned silence, all of us burst out laughing. Dan called her a perasan case and she defended herself by saying:
Next time be more specific lar. Got so many lengluis here wat.

Dan shook his head:
But you were the only one who answered!

Poor Carol. But I think the good-hearted gal just wanted to perk up our dreary afternoon in the office.

*I was just thinking...

Maybe it's an Asian conditioning to think that we're not good looking..

And if we think we are.. ppl will call us 'perasan'...

I think we need to learn to take compliments..

And why do we have to give ppl favours only if they are given a "false confidence boost"... it's so superficial.

We should call things as they are..

If you want a favour.. say something honest AND encouraging...

Like

Mr Flam-buaya-nt : Hi Ms (Gal assistant), I need a favour, could you help me? Beaming smile

Ms Gal Assistant : Sure

Mr FB: I need your help in scanning these documents.. and.. you know, I really appreciate you helping me.. Honestly.. and (say the truth).. you look really nice today, that's a nice scarf, you have a cheerful disposition.. etc etc..

I think an honest compliment is better than a self serving dishonest comment. It builds 2 characters up..

But then again.. is this an Asian thing to call ppl Leng Lui?

too much on thinking.. pls disregard if it doesn't make sense.. my mind is a blur today.. duh!

*Panjangnya komentar u :-)

Ya well, I think Dan was just being friendly and all. Quite a lot of makan stall owners do that, too. Dunno whether they are lying most of the time or not, bcos beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder after all ;-)

indeed beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.. so do we see with eyes of our heart, soul, spirit or the body?
