On Female Impersonators

Initially, I was wondering if I should actually blog about my experience watching the Simon's Cabaret show. As a show, I find it very entertaining. Most of the fascination came from the fact that the performers were all guys once upon a time. But I was hesitant to blog about it because it may seem to indicate that I was endorsing the lifestyle that the performers choose to live.

I think that drag queens, transvestites or transgendered folks are looking to be something that they think they are meant to be. They want it badly enough to go through the very painful sex change operation. Sally, our tour guide told us that a complete operation would require 6 months of complete bed rest for the patient. And they are also saying goodbye to the way they were born and treated all their lives. They also risk hurting their loved ones because of their decision to be true to their feelings.

My personal opinion is that we should appreciate what we have been given. Our talents, our body shape, our personalities, etc. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, for a reason. To alter our original design is like telling our Maker that He doesn't know what He's doing.

Having said that, the people who decided to go through with a sex and identity change mostly have a different belief system. To them, to live another day as the 'wrong' sex is akin to torture. And the sex operation procedure is such that only the most serious and determined folks would actually go through it. It weeds out those who are just curious and wanting to try out something new and different. In short, it takes a lot of thought and contemplation for someone to decide to live life as the opposite sex. And I can't even begin to comprehend the emotional trauma that they go through before and even after the sex change.

We can choose to boycott them, not support them and jeer them when they walk past our streets. But that would not stop them from dying a little each day living the life of a lie as they perceive it. We can preach to them, telling them to hold on and to appreciate what they have, but all they would feel is rejection. That you are trying to mould them to be something they are not. Some of them may even see the reasoning behind your arguments and decide to try living life the socially acceptable way. Others will not.

The way I see it, we are each entitled to make our own choices. We can try to force our viewpoints down others' throats and some of them may outwardly comply - just to keep the peace. But we can't win their hearts through force. Through disrespect.

In this sense, if your conscience tells you not to support transvestites by not watching shows like Simon's Cabaret, then you should heed it. To thine ownself be true. It's like a good friend of mine who disagrees with the inhumane way that sharks are killed for their fins. So she quietly refuses not to eat shark's fins soup during dinners and such and didn't make such a big fuss to the rest of us who guzzled on the divine dish. At the end of the day, we all have to stand firm on the principles that we are personally convicted upon and yet, not sport a holier than thou attitude. Although her actions did make me think twice before consuming my all-time favourite wedding dinner dish. Hmmm...

So my blog post about Simon's Cabaret is a recording of a show that has entertainment value in it. Something I thought was tastefully and professionally done. Nothing more. Nothing less.

And yes, I still think that they are absolutely gorgeous :-)

*Well written CC,
Behind each performer, a person, with a past and a future .. a created being, who is unable to find themselves and has not met the creator.. sigh

Thank you for a very intuitive and insight to what they are/have going/gone through to be where they are.

All in all, we are all looking for significance.. I am thankful, my significance is in Him, God Almighty, my creator, in whom I am wonderfully and fearfully made. Thank you Jesus, for finding & saving me.. :-)

*The first time i saw the show at Simon's was many years ago.
I just couldnt help being so amazed that the performers had specifications that many of our opposite gender mortals would be so envious and jealous about ! abeit doctored.
Many of those watching, men and ladies alike were gawking at the performers..
Reading yer post reminded me that beneath skin deep beauty lies a real human heart just like us longing for total acceptance n meaning in our existence...while it most unfortunate that these queens are manipulated into becoming entertainment objects, i agree with u Ariel tha
t i would not ply any more judgement on them, than what is already gnawing inside them from inevitable guilt and shame...Lets pray that they will find their way back to our Creator like your experience Paulos> well said...

*So concerning the show are we talking about males who want to be females or just guys dressing that way for the fun of it? Both exist and should be considered differently.

I wanted to try shark fin soup until I learned how the fins are harvested. I have no problem with harvest, but to cut off the fins and just leave the shark to die is an abominable waste. If they kept the whole shark, from which a lot could be gained, I would feel differently about it.

I just don't understand the waste.

*Mark, the performers were males who wanted to be females and who went through the total sex change operation.

*I think it's sad that now having achieved what they wanted, they exploit themselves based on their sexuality. There are those in the world who are "caught in the middle" and desperate to figure out who they are, and this group collects them for show. So many others who just want to live.

*Perhaps they feel that there are not many options made available to them.

*MarkLR: I am one of those who do not eat shark's fin. This is simply because I am against the act of killing endangered species for the sake of a dish. However, I find your reasoning for not eating it shedding new light on the topic. How does eating up other parts of the endangered animal make it right? Does it also mean that by cutting up a tiger and selling all it parts justifies the killing of the tiger simply because there was no wastage? If we were to make gorrila fur coats, gorrila sausages, gorrila anything and it would not be wrong? Don't take this the wrong way and assume that I am attacking you personally--it is not my intention for this to come out sounding that way.

Try taking a look at this website: http://www.petatv.com/ and ask yourselves if any of the killing can be justified.

*Paul, errrr... does Weisguy know something we don't?? :-P

Rapunzel, I saw the video in petatv. It sickens me to see the cruel way dogs and cats are being skinned for their fur :-(

*Hi rapunzel! I don't take it personally and thank you for saying that. I'm happy to discuss any issue until it gets personal then it just gets fuzzy, so I appreciate your approach very much. I was not aware that the species of shark most often used for soup was an endangered species. No, I would not encourage the consumption of any endangered species. As a Christian I am charged by God with the responsible stewardship of this planet to the best of my ability within my sphere of influence.

At the same time, there are serious issues with the way some endangerment declarations are made. Governments have become environmentally sensitive to the point where they often pass laws without proper investigation, and that isn't proper stewardship either. For instance, here in Pennsylvania the state just enacted new laws concerning how many fish we can consume per month/week. They greatly restricted consumption due to the presence of Mercury in the flesh of some fish. The problem is, they enacted these new laws state-wide based on the possibility that there might be Mercury, and only when a body of water is proven to not contain mercury will those particular rules be lifted.

It's a waste of money and resources to do things this way, especially since there has yet to be even one conclusive case of Mercury poisoning from fish consumption.

(I have to split my response in two cause I talk so much!)

*(Here's the rest!)

No disrespect to your beliefs intended in anyway by my next statement, ok? I will not accept anything from Peta. Peta kills animals themselves and has regularly insulted Christians and done some quite racist things which have cemented my doubts about them forever. I'm hapy to listen to any coherent, reasoned debate, but when they compare Blacks and Jews to animals I'm walking away from them. Here's some of the information I'm talking about.

-Actually after doing some searching, it doesn't appear the the shark used primarily for this soup is endangerd.

This site lists it as "near threatened" which certainly calls for care.

I'm not quite sure how tigers and gorillas came into this topic, but I view each animal, and each person, as an individual case. Different according to their own merits and deserving of such treatment.

As far as how consumption should occur, I am strongly in favor of humane treatment of animals in raising and disatch.
