That's What Big Sisters Are For

Lillian, Rina and I were sitting around the dining table. Eating Pringles and sipping Jim Beam with Coke (a most delightful concoction) and discussing something that Rina was going through.

It was quite a puzzling situation, really, one that may involve confronting someone. Lillian laid down the points in a very logical manner.

"If it gets to this point, you have to talk to the person. And if you don't feel like you are up to it, I'll do it for you," she said to her little sister.

Rina nodded and blinked in gratitude and this must be one of the rare few moments where I saw her take on the little sister role. A big change from her usual capable and gung-ho self. And I was touched. And was reminded of the times when HL, my second eldest sister would come to my school and defend me from being torn to shreds by the close-minded teachers. Even thinking about it now still brings tears of gratitude to my eyes.

It just goes to show that for all our independence, street smarts and what-nots, Rina and I still needed a protector and a defender who can speak on our behalf when we are swamped by problems that are too big for us to handle.

I guess that's why God gave us big sisters and big brothers. To defend, to protect, to love and to care for their younger siblings. To those who are taking advantage of their position to bully and rag their kid brother or sister, tone it down. Heh, don't I know how easy it is to boss my little brother around!

And to all those who are fulfilling their roles to a T, kudos to you. You never know the impact of the sense of love and security that you have given to your little siblings.

HL, I will never forget the times you came to my rescue and champion my rights. Thank you for being there when it matters. I love you, sis.

*Aw...porr rb. I feel for you. My bros and sisters are much older than I and we didn't share much growing up until I was a teen and could visit them.

CC - May I ask what was it that your teachers gave you grief about?

*Bones, you have a couple of us big sisters in the cg if you need anything, ya? Hugs

Mark, I decided not to take up the role of president in the English Language society to concentrate on my studies, and that opened a can of worms. They refused to give me the certification of participation (thought to be very important papers during our education years) for the years that I had put into the club. And they said very hurtful things about me in class and stuff like that. And my sis came to defend my reputation and clarify things with them.

It was a very dark time in my school life and my sis was the beacon that shone through. The pain of the incident has all been healed, thanks to God but the beacon still warms my heart to this very day.

*I should feel lucky of being the eldest. Never thought that being the eldest is that appreciated. Thank you for sharing a little sis's point of view when all an elder one needs is the 2-words " thank you ".

:-)

p/s : This is certainly a blog for all to read and reflect of what life is all about. Nicely done :-)

*Thanks, Coffee - for your encouragement (am very touched!) and for being an elder sis :-) Heh, sometimes kid siblings can be real pests but deep deep down in their hearts, they do love the elder ones to bits.

*Like RB, I also don't have elder siblings :-(

Heh. I can remember when my bro started wearing glasses in Std 1 and hated them. I went to see him once at recess (I was in Std 5 so my recess time was later than his) and his glasses were nowhere to be seen. I turned the whole school upside down looking for it and involved the Penolong Kanan, too :-P My bro had slipped the glasses in his pocket and they'd fallen out in the school field somewhere!

*You're welcomed, Coffee :-)

Wow Irene, you are a very responsible elder sis :-) So, was your bro appreciative of your efforts to find his glasses?
