Shallow Halles

Bones and I were sitting around and minding our own biz in church when we spotted an old friend of ours sitting in a few rows in front of us.

"Hey, I heard she's got a new boyfriend. Let's check him out!" I said, suddenly consumed by curiosity and forgot all about minding my own business.

So our eyes moved over to the seat next her. It was empty. Then our eyes moved again and they nearly popped out when we saw the guy. We blinked hoping that we were just seeing things but no, he still looked the same. There was no other person next to her. And he was leaning towards her and whispering things to her every now and then. That must be the boyfriend then.

And suddenly, I understood why people who mentioned about her boyfriend have this strange look on their faces.

"He errr... looks older than her, losing some hair but he really does seem like he could take care of her very well," was the general description.

Well, the person we saw fits the bill alright. Just that the general description was really an understatement of the person's true physical appearance. He was all that... and more.

Bones and I looked each other. The look of horror on our faces was mutual. Surely our pretty friend could do better than... than that!
... he really does seem like he could take care of her very well
And then we realised that our talk about looks not being a priority was not entirely true. That we do have this tendency to write off certain people as potential suitors based on their looks and the vibes they give us alone. I guess that would make us Shallow Halles.

About our pretty friend, we agreed that as long as she is happy with the guy, what we think about his looks matters not one jot. If she can look at his face every morning with love in her eyes, then good for her. Beauty, after all, lies in the eyes of the beholder.

In the mean time, Bones and I will hold out for Jake Gyllenhaal (her) and Grissom (me) lookalikes.

Additional Notes: If Bones and I were to display our previous beaus and crushes, you'll probably cringe at some of them. But to us, they were the best things next to sliced bread. As mentioned before, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. And love does strange things to people.

*"Huh! mmmm charn geh! (not matching leh in Cantonese)
was the comment, after we left talking to them a while..

>>same very thing we experienced yesterday morning..saw this sweet, cute, really pretty and capable young lass fren of my wife going out with this guy who looks like he lost quite a few strands, mirror polished top...and XL potbelly to boot.
My girls also asked "Is he really **'s (her) boyfren ah?" I answered "why cannot meh?" Silence....

but ur right Ariel, beauty does lie in the eyes of the beholder..
Love makes one make seemingly unlogical partnership choices..i was one it seems - as warned by an unhightened cousin of my darling wife!

Hold out u will with Bones but dun u think looks might not just be as important as other traits?
Hahahah! Grissom copies, where ru ?

*Hey... I hope we are not referring to the same guy. Sounds exactly like my old fren's bf leh.

We're shallow, admittedly, but I don't think we are that shallow though - as in basing on looks alone. If a Grissom lookalike shows up at my doorstep but behaves in a moronic manner, it'll be hard to sustain the initial attraction. Plus if he turns out to be mean and unkind, sorry lar.

And also, as we are holding out for our Mr. Very Suitables, we are working on our issues on being their Ms. Very Suitable. Fair is fair mah ;-)

~Amen! Be happy for a friend who finds someone who will love them truly, because that seems to be in rare supply these days. I believe that physical attraction is certainly a valid consideration, but the rest of the package must be there as well.

Imagine that a person marries, and 5 years later a horrible accident changes that person's looks forever. If the rest of the package is true love, the relationship will probably only grow stronger. If it isn't there, the relationship could break.

It's only human to want to enjoy looking upon one's love! :-)

*Yeah, well said, Mark.

What Bones and I meant was - for us, the initial attraction is unfortunately influenced by the physical looks. But after that, it's the person's character that will carry them through. When age does its job on the both of us - losing hair, gaining a pouch, etc - we hope that we will be able to look into our husbands' eyes and see the man we first fell in love with. True love would see to that.

*I agree...Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the trick is to keep that inner beauty in mind long after the outer looks fade away.

*Yeah, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. And let's not forget that other famous one - "One man's poison is another man's meat". Though, some may very well turn out to be poisoned meats! heh-heh!

*True lor, that's why it pays to pay attention when your bezzie and close pals have bad vibes about some 'poisoned meats'!

*eh, and know what?? I really believe God is fair. For those who lack in the "looks" department, they are given an overdose of pheromones to ensure the survival of the species. THEN it's not the matter of being in the "eyes" of the beholder. But rather the "nose", heh-heh. Now THAT's chemistry (",)

*Agreed! Good looks but bad B.O. also a big turn-off :-P
