The Ring

I'm generally not a ring person. I feel that they hamper my hand movements somehow. And never could understand why Frodo was so fascinated with the ring he pledged to destroy - aesthetic-wise, that is. It's just a plain gold band onliee mah.

Anyway, this is my stage wedding ring. I found it stashed in my purse today. Must have forgotten to keep it safe with my other accessories after the play ended. Couldn't bear to risk it being scratched by my coins and thus wore it on my ring finger today. Right hand.

My colleague M noticed it when I walked past her and cheekily flashed it to her. She gave me a delighted grin, "Wow, finally!"

"No lar, just wearing it because it looks nice. Wrong hand summore," I said.

H, another colleague asked, "Right hand is for engagement rings, right?"

I thought for a while and recalled seeing an engaged friend wearing her ring on her right hand, "Yeah lar, you are right, H. The ring also looks like an engagement one. But it can't fit my other fingers, except for the ring finger. Aiya, never mind lar. Doesn't matter if our colleagues think I'm engaged or married."

All three of us looked at the ring with wonder. For a cheap piece of costume jewellery, it is a pretty shiny thing. Hmmm, perhaps I can get used to wearing rings if they all look as nice as this.

*Hey, if he's really on the ball he'll do his homework and will pay attention to the little things! Haha!
I tell guys all the time who have unhappy girlfriends or wives that there are constant clues as to how to make her smile. If only they'd pay attention!

*Pebbles, I did some googling and found this:

"A bride can choose to wear her engagement ring on her right hand, and wedding ring on the left."

But u r right, it doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule.

*In Russia and Ukraine (and probably more) the men wear their wedding ring on the right hand as well.

*WOW!! that is a big one. Curious, how much would it cost for a real thing?

*Mark, thanks for the info!

Dt00, did another bout of googling and the real thing (0.5 carats) costs about USD1-2k. Approximately a month's salary in Malaysia or so. U planning to get one soon ah? :-P
#10 coolcat (Homepage) on 2005-08-11 01:15 (Reply)
*No, I am not planning to get one any soon-no finger to put it on. :-)

Just some thots of my frens delaying marriage due to the 'no money' factors.

I am wondering if the expectations of a shiny-old-rock, exotic honeymoon, ones's own roof, 100 wedding dinner tables and etc would add on to the 'cost of marriage' (& pressure), hence prolonging the decision.

*Yeah, there are couples who do that, DT.

But in my humble opinion, a good reason to delay marriage would be due to taking the time to learn more about each other so that they can adjust to a enriching married life together. Not because of wanting to have the most perfect and lavish wedding.
#12 Anonymous on 2005-08-11 07:53 (Reply)
*Indeed that is a practical reason. Time for discovery and for one to be sure of the other. Well, it's the second biggest decision in life, can't just play play, right?

Then again, which gal doesn't fancy wearing a diamond ring and dressing up in a beautiful wedding gown. And I think her man should try his best to fulfill her 'dream'.

I guess it depends on the financial capability of the couples, and being realistic in expectation.

*Ooooh, definitely not play-play wan! Which brings to mind all these reality tv shows that make a mockery of marriage. It's definitely not something to rush into without much forethought.
#14 Anonymous on 2005-08-12 00:17 (Reply)
*Haha, definitely agree! 'Cos that happens to be a line from one of my favourite songs :-)

*I guess we are living in a changing world now. With things being redefined from time to time, always with a notch down.

Cant disagree with you. Marriage needs much forethought. Only fools be rush in, that's what the wisemen said, right? :-)

*Take lots of time before making any big decisions kua. And hope for the best. That's all one can do :-P
#17 Anonymous on 2005-08-15 09:32 (Reply)
*One just can't help when falling in love, emotions will overrule the mind. Even wisemen will become fools.

So how?

*and some would take too long to think and decide till the ship has left the dock.

so how would one know, which ship is to take? :-)

#19 dt00 on 2005-08-15 16:49 (Reply)
*Alas, life is such. But it's too short for regrets, so can only make decisions based on the best info that you can get at the moment. After the decision is made, don't look back. No point.
#20 Anonymous on 2005-08-15 22:08 (Reply)
*At the counter double check the ticket you are buying, at the dock double check the ship you are boarding. Once the ship set sail towards the horizon, comes wind, storm or sun; it is a journey both have to make the best of it.

eh...must remember to remove the anchor and includes the ship captain. :-)
