Elvis who??

Went to Speedy yesterday to get an Elvis cd for research purposes. Couldn't locate any, so asked for help at the counter.

Sales assistant: De che tiang? (Who are you looking for?)
Me: Elvis Presley.
Sales assistant: Si mi lang?? (Whozzat??)
Me:(slow mo) El...vis Pres...ley.
Sales assistant: (gave me a pen and paper) Sia khi lai (Write it down)

As I wrote down THAT name, I was flabbergasted and shocked that he had never heard of the Elvis Presley - the King, the Legend. With the paper in hand, we checked the aisles for the cd but they didn't seem to have any on stock.

Sales assistant: Ee si ta poh ah si cha boh? (Is this person male or female?)
Me: Ta poh. Si liao. (Male. Dead already)

Then I proceeded to sing a line of 'Always on My Mind'. Nope, that didn't ring a bell in the teenager's head.

sigh

It's sad but I guess it's just a matter of time before the younger generation in Malaysia forgets all about crooners of the days of old. Especially when their parents grew up listening to Bananarama, Modern Talking and Duran Duran. For my love for oldies, I have my dad to thank. It would be something worth passing on to the next generation.

*Elvis who??
Was he that actor in Battlestar Galactica?

He he you sang Always on my mind to the clerk? Wow. If i did that that would freak her out.
(p/s: that probably wasn't Elvis' trademark song. Perhaps Love Me Tender or something like that lor?)

*Vagus, not you, too! :-P

Aiya, only sang the first line mar. No biggie :-) Another trademark song would probably be 'The Wonder of You'. But I'm not going to sing that to an Ah Beng anytime soon.

*Went to Speedy (mentioned in the first line of this blog entry mar) :-P

And man, I loved 'Love in the First Degree'. Nothing like the 80's, eh?

*I get that a lot too, with the music I listen to. I would recommend some other places to look instead of Speedy, but only if you really need it.

Ah lians - what do they know about The King? My parents still listen to Light and Easy (baby boomers mah)so it's a bit hard not to not know about the oldies. I've guy friends that also only listen to Light and Easy.

*hey synical, you make it sound like it's not normal for guys to listen to light and easy? true meh?

*Are Tower Records and Victoria Music part of your list, Synical? One other artist that I'm having a very hard time finding is Ronan Hardiman. Not one shop in Klang and PJ sells his albums - worse than Elvis! Any recommendations where I may find his stuff?

*I think Elvis trademark song would have been 'Can't Help Falling In Love'. Yeah, I have my dad and uncle to thank for always listening to oldies. In fact, I prefer oldies to the modern songs of today. Anyway, I, for one, would definitely pass on what I know of oldies to my children - Ray Charles, Connie Francis, Diana Ross, Neil Sedaka, Tom Jones etc.

*Hee, Diana Ross considered to be an oldie meh? But oooh yeah, I looove Neil Sedaka's songs, too! So cutesy wan.

*Posting on behalf of Ireneq - have shortened the comment timeout lock as suggested. Sorry, dearie for the inconvenience!

Irene:
Elvis punya nama I know lah but if you ask me about his songs... blank I never know who sang what song unless it's a song or artiste I really like (eg Diana Ross).

PS: I was looking for the Beach Boys' albums and couldn't find anywhere in KL/PJ, discovered a "best of" collection in Borders Singapore & HMV Singapore. Pathetic la our country. Worse come to worst, buy on Amazon.com :-)

*vagus: I don't mean guys in general - I just mean 21 year old guys; guys MY age listening to Light and Easy.

You can try Fantasy Music (Sunway Pyramid) and Music Magic (Central Market). Have to ask lah... worse come to worst, order online loh...

*Thanks, Synical.

Hehe, bet someone listened to the likes of Light and Easy when he was in his hey days :-P

*No worries, Coolcat :-)

Fantasy Music in Sunway is a wee bit expensive. I've bought stuff from them before and found the same album selling for less in Salem Cool Planet (or whatever that shop is calling itself now). But they do have a wider selection than some other stores. Tower Records in 1U has turned into a VCD store instead of a music store. They hardly stock any music albums anymore.

*There's a shop called Powerhouse (or something like that) near the cinema in IU. They actually sold Gin Blossoms - another difficult to find band! Abt Beach Boys, I couldn't find them in Speedy nor Jaya Jusco either.

Sad lar. So cham wan.

#15 synical (Homepage) on 2005-07-01 07:24 (Reply)
*Rock Corner is in the new wing rite? Nope, I'm referring to the one near the tgv cinema in the old wing.
