Just came back from a nice farewell dinner for a colleague, L. Thought it'd be nice to share something funny he shared tonight.
L: My third son will be a good lawyer one day. Even at this young age, he can already bargain and argue for things that he wants.
Everyone else: Wah, he so cute wan!
L: My second son, well, he's a happy-go-lucky child. Always being bullied by both his older and younger brothers. But I tell them not to bully him too much for he might just be their boss someday!
Everyone else: Wah, that may come true wan!
L: As for my first son... hmmm... mmmmm.... you know, I still can't figure out what he'll be good at. So I tell him that he would most probably end up as a dentist one day.
Everyone else: Wah, we didn't know that dentistry is the chosen profession for clueless people wan. Hahahaha!
I'd like to think that L was just joking lar
When I was young and clueless as to what I wanted to do with my life, I've NEVER ever thought of being a dentist. Seriously, looking at peoples' teeth in various stages of decay day in and day out needs some kind of toothy passion, at the very least. It's not something people jump into lightly. Besides having a stomach for it, one has to have great people skills and genuine concern for their patients and not treat them as mere numbers.
I also noticed that private dentists have evolved from being mechanical teeth repairers to teeth consultants. They take as much time as the patient needs to explain things related to oral health in a caring manner.
I used to wear braces and thus, I owe my dentists big time for making it possible for me to smile joyfully and confidently each day. You guys rock! To those who are studying or practicing dentistry, keep up the good work you are doing. I'm one of the many lives who has been transformed by your skills
