Scones and Hainanese Coffee at TTDI


Kimi Gallery Cafe must have been one of Taman Tun's best-kept secrets to a scone lover like me. It's quite hard to locate places which serve good ones in Klang Valley.

So when a friend suggested having lunch at a scone place in TTDI, I jumped at the chance.

The place looked very cosy and quiet. In fact, it was a tad too quiet. I felt like being in a sleepy small town. The Sabahan waitress who charmingly fumbled through our orders added to the small town feel. The strange thing was, not far from where we were seated, I could see the heavily congested traffic heading towards One Utama.

The first thing we ordered were freshly baked scones. Unfortunately, the freshest they had were baked last night. Beggars couldn't be choosers, so we had them.

And we were not disappointed. The scones smelled so buttery and was fresh and fluffy. We also ordered their signature beverage - Hainanese coffee which was heavenly and yet not as strong as the ones I had from other shops before. Just perfect for me.

*Hard to describe, this one must taste wan. Some shops mix horlicks and milo into the Hainanese coffee though. But it's definitely different from Ipoh white coffee.

*Hainanese coffee, me dunno how to describe, maybe I've tasted it maybe I haven't.

There's another place in Kenny Hills that serves scones and English breakfast, for me it was ok-lah.. my frens C and J love the place.

I wanna go back to Fraser's Hill's Rumah Kuantan, to eat the scones there.. i think they were divine. grin

*Hainanese Coffee is the kind of Kopi you get in Malaysian Chinese coffee shops. In the old days most proprietors of these coffee shops fry their own coffee grounds. The Hainanese, however, fry the grounds in butter and probably some other secret ingredient - giving the coffee a heavenly and aromatic taste. Yummm....

*Hmm... scones and Hainanese coffee. Interesting combination. Never heard of it in my life growing up Hainanese. (I "balik kampung" to a coffeeshop for CNY, where my grandparents are and is run by an uncle).

But yeah, Hainanese coffee can be pretty strong stuff - wangi and strong.

Are those white-yellow slices next to the jam cheese?

*James, that's as the most detailed definition of Hainanese coffee that I've heard of. U are Hainanese, rite?

Synical, hee, another Hainanese like James :-) Those sinfully yellow slices are thinly sliced butter, not cheese. Yummm!

Vagus, floating spoons, eh? First time hearing this woh :-P

*Strong coffee mar, so can float the spoon lor. Greater density than stainless steel.
Paul: You can submit this to Scientific America, patented Vagus' Coffee Strength Staging System. If can float a spoon, then it's strong coffee. If it's at solid-state at room temperature then even better.
CC: Congrats on getting your role. So we can expect to see your name/handprint in Hollywood in 5 yrs lor?
