The Phantom Love

Watched 'The Phantom of the Opera' yesterday and the songs were fabulous and Minnie Driver was hilarious as the vain diva Carlotta!

Think of Me - the first song sang by Christine (Emmy Rossum) left me teary-eyed. After all the thoughts on first loves and such, Think of Me is really a song about first love. I know, what a coincidence, eh? And how downright depressing. Irene watched it twice (!) and ended up feeling melancholy, too.

On the drive back, the songs I listened to reminded me of my first love. I didn't even bother to struggle with the thoughts and feelings. Just let the waves crash on the shore for a bit and then it will go away again with the promise of coming back. You just don't know when it will hit you again but it will.

Today, one colleague mentioned him during a lunch conversation - hmmm, is it me or is almost everything else conspiring to keep me thinking of him? Well, we had an enjoyable time yakking about the good old times. Actually, make that the bad old times for my colleague was reminiscing about the horrible time they had living in a household of quirky guys. Talking about him makes me strangely happy. I hadn't really talked to him for years and yet, conversations like this have this weird effect on me.

After so long of living with it, I've accepted it as part and parcel of life. I guess, it's ok to reminisce for a while, as long as you pull back into the joys of present living. There is no other option but to move on...

We must have it within this month or Feb because by Mar, my weekends will be fully booked :-P

I've yet to meet sweet Musical face-to-face but she's been a regular reader and commentator in this bloggie. And she's a big fan of musicals, too!

Gosh, sounds like a bad case of food poisoning, Musical. Being hungry is a good sign. Am praying for your healing. Take care, ya?

*Ha ha.. looks like I am being whipped man!

Anyways, maybe I should borrow someone's DVD and play it on a Home Theater system when I ain't tired/sleepy and re-evaluate the "movical" (movie-musical)

Another one that I'd like to evaluate is Les Miz..

Jots, I had the same exact notion about "That's all I ask of you" the song had in the sense a strong essence of the pledge of love and can be easily translated into Jesus' expression of love to us, His Church, His Bride.

I must say that this was the highlight of the movical and musical(1998) for me.

I have C.A.T.S the Musical on video which I recorded from TV. Anybody wanna watch it.. but I need to arrange for a VHS player...

*Hahah, Paul the Purist nods off at the highly acclaimed screening of the Phantom movie. Ah well, got a friend who didn't really enjoy it, too. Different strokes for different folks ;-)

*I saw you and I was thinking "how could Paul fall asleep?!" Ok, so I watched it with Paul and Rina last night. The songs were still running in my head this morning and I listened to the songs again during work. Wonderful!

Anyway, an interesting thought came to me while Christine and Raoul were singing "That's All I Ask Of You". Half-way through the song when Raoul sang "Let me be your shelter...", I felt like Jesus was singing it to me. The lyrics just jumped up in front of me. After that experience, this song is not just a love song between lovers but it's also a love song between God and me. After reading through the lyrics again, I am so much more in love with Jesus!

*True more background, but was it really what was written in the first place?

Different ppl like their tea prepared differently.. I am a purist you might say. But am always willing to experience change. And see it first-hand.

I guess I appreciate musicals "live" better because there's that technical and realism aspect that can only be captured "once" without a "re-take" on the shot. It makes it tougher and unique each time.

PaulOS the Purist.. ;-)

*Sorry you didn't enjoy movie version of Phantom, Paul. My colleague who saw both the stage and movie versions of Phantom preferred the movie one because it gives more background to who Phantom was.

But it will take a long time before we Malaysians get to see the stage version on our shores...

*Okie... i watched Phantom last nite..

I must say I was disappointed, or maybe I was just tired. I may have come to a conclusion that I don't want to watch Musicals on Big screen or Tape etc. I must say Phantom was a disappointment to me.

Or probably I was tired.. I even slept.
The aircond was busted.

So far musicals I've enjoyed on video are the old one's like Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Oliver...

Les Miserables is by far the best I've seen in theater.... It comes highly recommended.

Phantom:The Movie's only redeeming point is "All I Ask of you" and it was just the song and arrangement that I appreciated.

Just my onion.. i mean opinion..

*Yup, I saw the movie for free the first time coz I was reviewing it for my company. The second time round I brought my mom to see it :-)

And I just bought the soundtrack CD. I know, I am a masochist -- I MUST torture myself by playing "All I Ask Of You" over and over... rolls eyes

mushy sigh

*Hey, I have the Sarah Brightman & Cliff Richard version of that song. Very, very sigh-inducing. Hahaha... when you are bored with the song, try listening to something chirpier. I'm into Simple Plan now - they rock!

*I remember watching the play while I was in Melbourne. I went with a group of friends to Princess Theater.. Let me look for the pictures... I'll scan them and post them..

I liked the part where the phantom's rowing the boat on the stage, with all the candles popping up from the stage.. magical!
