In One's Own Words

Mood: Bean-ish

"Hey, Ariel! I've got something to pass to you," Vera said excitedly when she saw me and then presented a white envelope to me with a flourish. "It's an appreciation letter from the project committee for the work you've done for them."

"Gee, thanks," I said and opened the envelope to read the letter. My own words of appreciation stared back at me.

Remember the Mr. Bean's Christmas episode where he wrote some Christmas cards to himself, went out, slid them into his door mail slot, came back in and then gasped in delight at receiving those cards?

Well, at that moment, I kinda felt like that. It's a weird thing to read a letter you composed being given back to you. Ok, at least my efforts are being put to good use, so that was great. A few days ago, they gave me a fluorescent keychain in the shape of a cross as a token of appreciation. At least it wasn't me who bought it only to find that I'm the intended recipient... heh!

But I guess, at the end of it all, receiving letters of appreciation are better than getting none at all. Even if I was the author of the letter. It's the thought that counts... right?

...right?

*That's so weird. I mean, you always know these things are form letters, but now you really know know and it's not a nice feeling eh? Makes you wonder whether the sentiments expressed are actually fake, and whether they're just doing it (sending the appreciation notes) for the sake of doing it, because "it's the proper thing to do". :-(

*Thanks, Irene for totally understanding how I feel :-)

You know, I'd feel better not receiving this one actually. I honestly didn't expect to - not when it was my own composition.

I guess you are right, maybe they think it's the proper thing to do.

In all fairness, they also belanja us for a few rounds of makan (feasts) for team bonding and appreciation. So, I know they mean well.

Maybe can suggest to them that they should skip the letter form of it in future ;-)
