Ahh, that was the sentence which caught my eyes in that lad lit I mentioned
yesterday. But for the life of me, I can't remember the book title! Oh anyway, the premise of the story is a bit weird. A lad was dumped by his girlfriend with that deathblow of a sentence. And she went on to say, "You have let yourself go, and so I have decided to let you go, too."
The poor sod took it well. He decided to clean up his act and win her heart back.
I couldn't help but feel that something just isn't right there. Now, what if the tables are turned. If some guy tells a girl that he's dumping her because it's her fault for letting herself go unkempt, we feminists would rail out in disgust at him, no?
"For crying out loud, take a good look at yourself. You are not model material so why are you harping on her?"
"She probably have some issues to settle, why don't you give her a break, you insensitive jerk?"
"You men are so hopelessly shallow! You don't love nor appreciate real inner beauty when it's staring at your face!"
Those feminists would also bark at the insipid girl for wanting to win back the heart of the man who dumped her:
"What, are you out of your mind? Why on earth would you want to go back to someone who doesn't love you for who you are? Get a move on, girl!"
I just think that sometimes we, feminists (someone who promotes women's rights, interests and issues) are too quick to point an accusing finger towards the guy when there is a breakdown in romantic relationships. Of course, there is a place for loyalty and supporting our sisters in distress regardless of who's right or who's wrong. But I think that sometimes we need to give the poor guys a break. Just as it is revolting to see a woman cowering under the fear of a tyrannical and abusive man, it is equally disgusting to see a man tremble before a bossy and domineering she-devil.
