This Is Me

Yep, it's been a hazy week in KL, PJ and hereabouts. Pic taken during the penthouse visit :-)

Imagine a typical scene from Sex and The City. Carrie Bradshaw walking home with some date. They stop somewhere on the sidewalk. And she announces with that endearing broad smile of hers and pointing flamboyantly to her apartment, "Well, this is me!"

I've always wondered if it was proper English to say that. But it's kinda true in a way. The house that you live in would reflect some of your personality and lifestyle preferences.

And so there I was, invited to take a peek (and snap some pics!) of a friend of a friend's house. It was the first time I've ever stepped into a penthouse. And get this, you can actually see the sky while doing your biz in the zen-like toilet. You are at the top, no one else is residing above you! Whoo hoo!

It was homey and yet designed to display beautiful paintings and sculptures in a galleria-like manner. Spacious, trendy and tasteful would be the three words I'd use to describe it.

After my baby and I had our fill of pics and all of us trooped out of the penthouse, I realised that nice as the house was, it wasn't... me. If I ever had a chance to have a me house, it would be cosy, warm, with lots of nice comfy sofas, big windows overlooking a nice lawn/garden and a cat perched upon the window sill. The kitchen would have the English cottage kitchenette look and feel with a wooden dining table. And most importantly, a big sturdy woody bookshelf and a quaint study desk which doubles up as a computer table.

Yeah, that's probably the ideal me house. The English-like concept would look kinda odd in KL. But it'll be so cool to stop in front of such a house smack-dab in a busy town and say proudly, "This is me!"

*I like you idea of a home. All I ever wanted was a small cottage in some dull wet and windy country like Ireland. Now that would be me haha

*that is soooooo true! That's why I moved out from the parental roost early, just to have a place that is ME! And I think I totally achieved that with my living room - bookshelves cramped with books, CDs and films, lush comfy sofas and a errrr.... daybed! :-P

*"This is me" is correct idiomatic English.
"This are I" on the other hand would be a little more questionable.

On a different note, I've always wondered why houses in Malaysia don't age gracefully, even the ones owned by rich people.

There is a certain lack of creativity in design. Why don't they use red bricks or limestone bricks like in houses in colder climates? Why must everything be concrete?

Seriously, I have never seen a farmhouse-style house type of style in Malaysia (except Ye Olde Smokehouse up on Cameron Highlands). I don't see any practical reason against it -- it's not a lot more expensive in terms of m aterials, and with the proper insulation, the temperature inside the house can be kept pretty well regulated.

*Haha, I agree with your observations on the brick vs concrete usage in Msia. There are some houses which uses those kinda bricks and they command some attention - like got some Ang Moh staying there. Perhaps concrete goes well with most Malaysians, for some reason.
