Brownie Points

Helping some friends plan for their wedding. This is where my smallish Canon Ixus 40 camera came in handy. My d50 was simply too big and bulky to bring along in our expedition. It's hard taking photos on the sly with it since it practically screams - "Look at me!" everywhere I bring it to. So with some sadness in my heart, I left it behind.

Anyway, I snapped lots and lots of pictures so that we can show them to her family and fiance. I was particularly taking pains to tweak the bridal gown photos that she fell in love with so that her fiance will bowl over at the effect of it all. And bask in his good taste for choosing such a lovely creature for a wife.

After that I tweaked and resized photos of the restaurant which we thought was suitable to host the wedding dinner. Sent those files to the fiance and we waited for his feedback.

First thing that came back from those quarters was, "Wah, nice venue! Food looks yummy!"

Eh?

"Oi, what about the dress lar?"

"Oh, didn't look at that yet."

I was flummoxed. "But aren't you the least bit curious about how she looks like in all splendour and glory? She looks awesome wor!"

"Nope, bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her wedding dress before the ceremony mar."

Wah, like that also can ar?

I'm not sure about the bad luck thing but I do know that girls would dearly love to hear compliments on her appearance especially from the ones very close to her heart.

A simple, "Honey, you look so beautiful and stunning in that dress" would earn you an obscenely high amount of brownie points.

But nope. Food venue takes precedence over that. Luckily, that guy's not my fiance. Otherwise...

:-P :P

*Otherwise...what will happen to him, leh?

You toss him into the blended and make brownies out of him?! Good idea, huh?

*I can imagine having baked him in an oven then topped it with creamy sweet vanilla creams. Then, pop it on top with a cherry! Yummy! Haha!

*errrrmmmm ... I'm quite traditional. So, if tradition says that it's bad luck to look at ur bride in her gown b4 wedding, then i wouldnt want my groom to take that chance either! (",)

*but but why bad luck.. he's always seen her before the wedding.. i.e. during courtship etc etc.. what's wrong with seeing the bride before the wedding.. it's probably some old wive's tale.. why live under a curse.. live in freedom from all dis "lies" :-D

*Death by baking?? x_X So Hansel and Grattel lol.

Anyway, poor baby of yours getting left behind and all. I'm planning on getting a Canon 350D and I'm afraid of the stares it'll draw lol.

Btw, what's the badluck if a groom sees the bride in gown before the wedding? :-P
#7 Anonymous on 2006-08-22 05:03 (Reply)
*yuh, but not in THAT dress! Oh well, just keeps traditions alive, like hantaran, bersanding etc. :-P
#8 twinnie on 2006-08-22 06:43 (Reply)
*Merv, get a feel of all the dSLRs before you make your purchase. I was all set to get 350D but it felt smallish in my hands. I loved the way d50 felt and that's what clinched the deal. No regrets.

Guys, you all have a point. FYI, the fiance in question has been doing some research to uncover the roots behind this superstition. The nearest explanation can be found here: http://wedding-raleigh-dj-nc.aceofmusic.com/Interest.html

Q: Why it is "bad luck" for the groom to see the bride before the ceremony?

A: Until relatively recently, brides were considered the property of their father. Their futures and husbands were arranged without their consent. The marriage of an unattractive woman was often arranged with a prospective groom from another town without either of them having ever seen their prospective spouse. In more than one instance, when the groom saw his future wife, usually dressed in white, for the first time on the day of the wedding, he changed his mind and left the bride at the altar. To prevent this from happening, it became "bad luck" for the groom to see the bride on the day of the wedding prior to the ceremony.

*haaa.. if so, then by complying to this "superstition" / tradition.. does it imply dat the bride simply is
1. property
2. have no say
3. a slave

muahahaha.. let the groom see da bride before the wedding.. break traditions/superstitions that seek to bind and suppress us.. uphold traditions that build us.. :-P

*Never know that fact before this! Thanks for sharing, Coolcat! :-)
#11 Anonymous on 2006-08-22 22:50 (Reply)
*Yeah, if that's the root of the superstition then we should break free from it. Because he already saw the bride anyway mar :-D
#12 Anonymous on 2006-08-22 22:53 (Reply)
*nope, upholding tradition nowaday means just that - honouring old beliefs, nothing about being 1, 2 & 3 :-P
#13 twinnie on 2006-08-22 23:36 (Reply)
*Well, nothing abt 1,2 and 3. But built upon the basis of the groom rejecting the bride upon seeing her for the first time on the wedding day and changing his mind then. Which doesn't make sense because he has seen the bride's face many times before.

And if he's a stickler in upholding this tradition, then he only needs to avoid seeing her on the wedding day before she marches to the altar. But he can still see her wedding dress way beforehand mar.

*well, i know of a groom who saw his bride in her wedding gownon the morning before the ceremony. He was sooooo overcome by the vision of her that he was a blubbering mess throughout the ceremony. (",)
#15 twinnie on 2006-08-23 00:39 (Reply)
*LOL!!! Maybe that's the real reason kot :-P
#16 coolcat (Homepage) on 2006-08-23 00:41 (Reply)
*Hayah, easy on ma. Put some cartoon face on the bride's face so that the fiance can only see her body in that dress.
#17 Anonymous on 2006-08-23 02:44 (Reply)
*Wat if that evokes the curse of the Phantom Bride??

Scary, man :-P
#18 coolcat (Homepage) on 2006-08-23 03:40 (Reply)
*Wa-lau-eh, so pantang 1 ar? Orang Cina memang leceh le.

#20 Anonymous on 2006-08-23 21:32 (Reply)
*Hehehe, that's a good tip, Nianci ;-)
#21 coolcat (Homepage) on 2006-08-24 06:59 (Reply)
*I personally dont believe in that 'curse' or whatever. But i wouldnt want my groom to see me in my wedding gown before the wedding well, simply cos i think it is nice to have him bowled over as i glide down the aisle...element of surprise..

If really dont want the groom to see, then go tailor make a gown from scratch like i am doing - then the gown changes everytime he sees it! mauahaha!
#22 Anonymous on 2006-08-24 02:27 (Reply)
*Haaa.. that's a good reason lah.. :-D also logical.. not like some bad luck curse... cheh phui phui phui.. hehehhe

when you getting married lah? hmmm interesting .. :-D
