Coolcat's Worldcup Fever FAQ

image

It's pretty interesting the kinda response I get when I ask people if they are into the World Cup.
"Oh, no... don't tell me that you are one of those football nuts??!"

"Ooooh, that's strange. You don't strike me as a girl who likes soccer."

"Eh, I know why you like soccer. Must be because of the cute guys, right??"

"Why football? Why???!"

Ok, since there are a barrage of questions regarding my recent interest in Fifa's World Cup from friends, family and fiends, I thought a blog entry about this is called for.

When did this fever start?

It started in June 2002's World Cup. I was excited to see South Korea getting to where no Asian country has ever been before. It gave me hope that it's not just a Brazil/European dominated game.

Why did this fever persist?
  1. Good conversation starter - I am amazed by this instant bond and connection that Worldcup fans all over the world have. Two complete strangers having a cup of coffee at a cafe can become instant friends when they notice each other checking out the Worldcup section in the local newspapers.

  2. A healthier alternative to war - I realised that the money spent in promoting and hosting this world famous event is something worthwhile. Instead of plonking moolah into weaponry and building an army to wage war against the nations, the nations can thrash out their angst against each other (if there's any). It's way better than war. I say, let the boys sweat it out and take on their opponents and do their best for their God, King/Queen and Country.

  3. The beauty of the game play - When I watched the Germany vs. Costa Rica match last Friday, I could see how the Costa Rican team improved their game play as they progressed. They passed the ball better to each other - all 11 players moving as one. The harmony and unity of the team was a truly beautiful thing to watch. I saw how skillful Super Porras (the Costa Rican goalie) was and how he valiantly deflected goal after goal that Germany dished out his way. I think soccer is a game of strategy, tactics and most importantly, heart, soul and passion. And that, to me is beautiful.

But surely you are swayed by the good looking soccer players such as Miroslav Klose, Totti and the likes?

I'm a girl - a mere human. Of course, having dishy looking players don't hurt any ;-) But they are not the main reason lar. Eye candy is merely a bonus. Really wan :-P :P

So, who do you support?

Generally, the underdogs in every match.

I also support South Korea, Japan and Germany. Brazil is in a class of its own as everyone can attest to. I have a feeling that they'll get to the finals. They are such a brilliant team, they don't need my support.

What's your battle cry?

Viva le soccer! May the most united and heartwarming team win!

*Spoken like a true Union Jack fan. Yea, England has a very slim chance of making it far. I really hope Germany would get to meet Brazil again at the finals. I do, I do, I do :-D
